Sensor Networks and Cloud Computing have received tremendous attentions from both academia and industry, as they are emerging to own numerous exciting applications in Internet of Things and Cyber Physical Systems (e.g., industrial process control, video surveillance, structural health monitoring, mobile commerce, mobile learning, mobile gaming), which can fundamentally change the way people interact with the physical world. Sensor-Cloud is the product of combining Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and Cloud Computing together. For example, it integrates WSNs and cloud computing and allows truly pervasive computation between the physical world and the cyber world.
However, new security challenges need to be addressed in order to accelerate the development of these integrated applications. For example, first, in Sensor-Cloud system, one sensor is usually shared by several users, which will lead to the collision and deadlock of system. This is the so-called “coupled problem”. Secondly, Sensor Network Provider (SNP), Cloud Service Provider (CSP) and Cloud Service User (CSU) are included in Sensor-Cloud. Without trust and reputation calculation and management of CSPs and SNPs, it is easy for them to choose the other party with low trust and reputation. Third, in Sensor-Cloud system, the data generally related to privacy highly while the storage space is low on sensor networks. If the massive data are stored in cloud, it is easy to be disclosed. Finally, due to sensors’ weak abilities in processing and communication, it is difficult to implement fault-tolerant technique to guarantee the security and dependability of sensor-cloud system, which makes the aforementioned security and privacy problems worse.
This calls for the urgent need to consider and develop new mechanisms to fill the gap between WSNs and Cloud, i.e., security and privacy. Future sensor and cloud integrated systems need to close the security and privacy gap in face of challenges in different circumstances. This Special Issue is proposed to bring together researchers to exchange the state-of-art research results to solve for the security and privacy issues of sensor-cloud systems.
